"Wonderful Tuscan retreat - quiet, authentic medieval experience!"
My husband and I loved our stay at Montalto Castle. It is like going back in time to a place where life is slower and quieter. You really feel like you are living in the Middle Ages. What we thoroughly enjoyed was the fact that Diana and Giovanni have endeavored to retain the authentic feel of a medieval castle - there is no pavement, no air-conditioning, and there is a rustic feel to the whole place. The castle dates back to about 1000 AD and it just emanates history. We really enjoyed the history lesson that Giovanni gave us about Montalto, and the area surrounding it. Life is made comfortable by the wonderful hospitality of Diana and Giovanni and their family and by the very accommodating concierge, Alessandro, all of whom speak English very well. They were happy to give us tips about the surrounding countryside and towns, and arranged outings for us when we were not certain of how to do it. We really liked cooking our own meals, and there were always fresh herbs from the Montalto gardens available for free to enhance them. There is also a lovely pool on the grounds outside the castle gates which was a welcome refuge in the long hot days of summer. We also enjoyed the fact that Montalto is a working farm in the country, and that the guests become like family there. There is a warm, welcoming atmosphere that is wonderful to return to after a long day of sightseeing in the Tuscan sun. We would most certainly recommend Montalto to those who are seeking a quiet refuge with an historical touch, possibly looking to recapture their pastoral roots and whimsical sides. Don't expect, however, a sleek, ultra modern facility. The charm of Montalto lies in its rustic feel and overwhelming hospitality!

"Heaven on earth in the hills of Tuscany"
My husband and I and three ten year olds had a marvelous stay at the Castello di Montalto for a week in July 2009. We rented a three bedroom (the gamekeeper's cabin) with a large living room, spacious kitchen and two outdoor spaces, a table and chairs in the back and a large deck with table and chairs off the master with views over the Tuscan countryside. We enjoyed breakfast daily in the common room and ate outside under the grape arbor. The built in pool, ping pong table and grounds were enjoyed by all. The charming hosts had us over for wine and conversation and also hosted an impromtu barbecue one evening. The entire week was fantastic, and it was an ideal location (just outside of Siena) for various day trips to explore Tuscany. It was one of the highlights of the Italy trip. We look forward to our next trip back.
